The Challenge

Due to digitalization and automation, highly skilled personnel are laid off and are having difficulties finding employment. The challenge is the skills they possess are no longer desired (in their current format). Some examples include financial auditors who manually reconcile accounting documents, factory workers who physically manufactured products, and cashiers. These jobs can now be done by robots and software.

When augmented with digital skills, laid-off employees' real-world expertise become extremely valuable.

Jane, the factory employee

For example, the factory employee, let’s call her Jane, who for the past 25 years, has assembled products with her hands is no longer needed as the organization migrates to a digital factory. The assembly labor is done by robots, who can assemble more products within a shorter time than Jane can do. Jane’s expertise is extremely valuable but in a different manner.  Robots need humans to train and monitor their work to ensure high-quality goods are produced. With some upskilling on how to interact, program, and monitor robots, Jane can leverage her years of manufacturing expertise to ensure the machine assembles quality goods.
